Light Rail train hits missing woman at station | News
SACRAMENTO, CA - A light rail train hit a woman who walked onto the tracks just as the train was slowing for the I-80/Watt Avenue stop just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The woman was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center where she was reportedly able to talk to emergency room workers.
The woman who was hit by the train was identified as 66-year-old Alice Alspektor, who has been reported missing since Tuesday night, Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos said.
Alspektor was considered at-risk because she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and dementia, Ramos said.
Chauncy Vin, who witnessed the crash, said Alspektor appeared oblivious to the train, even as the driver honked his horn and hit his brakes even harder.
"She walked out in front of the train. It hit her. She got sucked right underneath it. Dragged her for a little while," Vin said.
Vin tried to talk to Alspektor after the crash.
"I went over there, she moved her leg, she was still breathing, still alive," Vin said.
Sacramento firefighters were on scene in about 5 minutes and took just a few minutes more to deploy heavy hydraulic jacks to lift the front train car and remove Alspektor, who was was conscious, but not able to talk coherently at first.
It's not clear why Alspektor walked onto the tracks, but she was standing just behind the platform that may have blocked her view of the train.
"It looked like she just kind of sauntered across the tracks not paying attention. I don't know if she couldn't hear or what the case was," Vin said.
Firefighters said it was remarkable Alspektor was still alive, although apparently in critical condition according to firefighters.
