Run 4 Independence Registration at Leatherby’s

There are just two weeks left before the 9th annual Run 4 Independence, held on Saturday, June 29 at Elk Grove Regional Park!  It’s your opportunity to join hundreds of friends to fight hunger! The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a Kids’ ¼ and ½ mile race.  The 10K run and 5K run/walk starts at 8:30 a.m.  This event is the largest annual fundraiser for the Elk Grove Food Bank Services.

For your convenience, you can register for the Run at Leatherby’s Family Creamery, 8238 Laguna Boulevard on Saturday, June 15, 2013 and Saturday, June 22, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Convenience store to get healthy make-over

South Oak Park was recently identified as “food desert”. A “food desert” is an area where fresh produce is scarce. In these areas supermarkets are far away and the only close stores are convenience stores, but these normally lack healthy foods.

Sam’s Market on 42nd street and 26th avenue will go a step further, and starting on Saturday May 26th it will launch their healthy corner store makeover.

They’ll stock their shelves with fresh local produce in hopes of residents choosing this over unhealthy foods.

Executive Director of Alchemist CDC, Davida Douglas said, “Our goal is to provide convenient access to healthy food and fresh produce for residents, promote produce consumption to community members; ultimately resulting in improved health.”... Read More

The relief and recovery effort is underway in the Oklahoma City area after a an EF-5 twister tore through Monday, leaving 24 dead and 12,000 - 13,000 homes damaged or destroyed.

Officials estimated the recovery cost at $2 billion.
