Sacramento Music Festival Announces Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band as Friday Night Headliner

Known for their hard-rocking, blues-based and guitar-driven music that really energizes a crowd, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band will headline the first night of the 40th Anniversary Sacramento Music Festival that opens on Friday, May 24.  Music enthusiasts from near and far will spend Memorial Day Weekend celebrating four decades of amazing world-class musical entertainment taking place on 24 venues throughout Sacramento.

Complete with a high-energy Friday night kick-off by the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band  and a vibrant Saturday morning parade, the musical celebration will also showcase live musical performances by Los Lobos, Ben Taylor, The Blasters, John Lee Hooker, Jr., The James Hunter Six, Wanda Jackson, Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, James Garner’s Cash Tribute, The Rhythm Vandals, The Beer Dawgs, Jimmy Pailer, The Kyle Rowland Band, and many more!

Celebrate National Train Day This Saturday with FREE Admission to Two Museums!

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Amtrak, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum will proudly celebrate the sixth annual National Train Day by offering free Museum admission, tours of modern-day Amtrak California passenger cars and special rail-related activities inside and outside the Museum!  And, to add to the celebration and extend the fun, the nearby Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento will also offer free museum admission on this special day. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this one day only, kicking off promptly at 10 a.m.

3rd Annual Arts Alive! event returns to Cosumnes Oaks High School

On Thursday, May 9, Cosumnes Oaks High School and Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School will open their doors to the public to showcase their visual and performing arts programs with their annual Arts Alive! event.  This year, Arts Alive! will expand from the Cosumnes Oaks High School Performing Arts Center and Black Box Theater to include displays in the library, art quad and school’s newest facility, the rHouse.

The annual Arts Alive! event will feature projects and performances from the following departments: art, ceramics, dance, graphic design, instrumental music, vocal music, photography and theater.

Railroad Museum Debuts "Pick Me!" Fruit Crate Art Exhibit this Week!

The California State Railroad Museum will debut the third and final phase of fruit crate art as part of a a visually-powerful exhibit titled "Pick Me! A Bumper Crop from the Pacific Coast" that opens on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. After focusing exclusively on California crate labels for the first two years, the third phase of this popular exhibit includes selections from the entire U.S. Pacific Coast.  For example, colorful labels showcasing Washington cherries and Oregon apples join the ranks of California oranges and asparagus that serve to entertain and amaze visitors.

Chosen from the Museum's collection and on loan from private lenders, the evocative art portrays vibrant hues and whimsical motifs that romanticized life in the West.

Sacramento Museums Extend into Evenings With Special Events & Activities in May!

In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long.  In May, many of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are celebrating the season and warmer weather by extending into evening activities, a sampling of which follows:

Adults Only Underground Tours – Every Thursday Evening Thru Summer
The Sacramento Historic Old Sacramento Foundation is proud to offer weekly “adults only” tours of the underground on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. Entertaining and knowledgeable guides lead tour guests on walking tours that explore some of the dark secrets and racy tales lurking in Old Sacramento’s underground history.

Lightning Boy is "King Bee"

Drytown Club, Amador County -- Lightning Boy Kory Gibbs belts out Slim Harpo's "King Bee " with his band Saturday, 4-20-13, at the Drytown Club. Baby Boomers know The Stones and Blues Brothers also adapted "King Bee" to their genre of blues.

If only John Belushi could hear Lightning Boy's riffs. Maybe The Stones will hear him on their upcoming tour, possibly dubbed "This May (Really) Be The Last Time." Tick-Tock, Mick.
