SACRAMENTO - A Sacramento man allegedly shot his neighbor's dog Thursday night after he encountered the dog off its leash.

Officer Doug Morse of the Sacramento Police Department said police received a call from the dog's owners at 5:37 p.m., reporting someone had shot their pet.

When officers arrived at the 7800 block of Deerhaven Way, they found an armed man in his 30's, and the dog dead at the scene, said Morse.

An ensuing investigation revealed the dog had escaped from its yard. The shooter told police he saw the large dog loose in the street and thought it would come after him, so he shot it, Morse said.

The man was cited for negligent discharge of a firearm.
