UPDATE: Man, 85, missing after hospital visit located

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says Ross Hightower, who went missing after he left a south Sacramento hospital Monday afternoon, has been found.

Hightower, 85, was safe, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos. No other details about where and when Hightower was found were made available.

Students say they started smoking pot before High School

20 Hiram Johnson students were surveyed in a computer class about their history of smoking marijuana. Out of those who admitted to having smoked marijuana, 11 claimed to have started smoking in elementary school. Three of those students said they were smoking by age 7 or 8 because members of their family smoked.

Many started smoking weed in junior high school. One student said, “I smoke because it makes me relax. ” Another student said, “It relieves stress.” Some smoke because they feel like it and have been through a lot in their past.

Nine of the students surveyed believe marijuana is healthy for you while eight of the students believe it is unhealthy.

Most students say smoking marijuana made them feel great. One student said it made him feel, “Bad, thats why I quit.”... Read More

Celebrate National Train Day This Saturday with FREE Admission to Two Museums!

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Amtrak, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum will proudly celebrate the sixth annual National Train Day by offering free Museum admission, tours of modern-day Amtrak California passenger cars and special rail-related activities inside and outside the Museum!  And, to add to the celebration and extend the fun, the nearby Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento will also offer free museum admission on this special day. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this one day only, kicking off promptly at 10 a.m.

Toby Johnson Middle School teacher selected for 2013 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies for America

Arlis Groves, a social science teacher at Toby Johnson Middle School, has been selected to attend the 2013 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies for American Educators, sponsored by the Korea Society in partnership with the Korea Foundation and the Freeman Foundation.

Groves will participate in a 12-day, expenses-paid study tour of Korea during which fellows will visit a high school, museums and sites of historical and cultural interest.  Lectures on Korean history, culture, politics, economics, arts and language will be provided by university faculty.  The fellowship, which runs from June 26 to July 7, is open to middle and high school social studies and world history teachers.
