Sacramento firefighters extinguish fire at abandoned McDonalds

SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento Metro Fire Department fought a fire at an abandoned McDonalds on Florin Road and East Stockton Boulevard Wednesday around 8 p.m.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to get the fire under control after the fire spread from the front of the building to the attic, chief Scott Cockrum said.

About 25 firefighters with five engines, three trucks and two command staff responded to the fire.

A firefighter on the scene said transients may have started the fire because they have been seen in the area.

SMUD: Rancho Seco only LOOKS like a nuke plant

HERALD (SACRAMENTO COUNTY), CA - Although it's been 22 years since the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant generated electricity, SMUD is still sensitive to questions about its potential danger.

"We look kind of like a nuclear power plant because the structures remain, but they are indeed empty," said SMUD plant superintendent Einer Ronningen during a media tour of the site.

SMUD arranged the tour Wednesday, saying a number of people had called to ask whether Rancho Seco is safe in light of the Japanese nuclear disaster.

Sacramento County voters pulled the plug on nuclear power in 1989 after 15 years of operational trouble with the plant.  Rancho Seco was formally decommissioned in 2009.

"Fix A Leak Week" aims at stopping drips

"Fix A Leak Week" aims at stopping drips

SACRAMENTO, CA – California American Water has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency to promote its annual “Fix a Leak Week,” which runs from March 14-20.

The campaign, part of the EPA’s WaterSense program, is designed to raise awareness about small leaks and other water waste that may be occurring within our homes. Although a leaky faucet or garden hose may seem like a small problem to the individual homeowner, in aggregate these seemingly minor leaks add up to a colossal amount of wasted water when considering there are more than 110 million households in the United States.

The EPA estimates that more than a trillion gallons of water are lost annually nationwide through leaks occurring within our homes, with average residence losing 11,000 gallons a year this way. However, through the “Fix a Leak Week” campaign in partnership with local water purveyors like California American Water, we are hoping to significantly reduce that number.
