Fruitridge Health & Wellness Collective pledging $50,000 to UC Davis Health System

Sacramento’s Fruitridge Health & Wellness Collective (FHWC) is inaugurating its 5-year pledge to UC Davis Health System, pledging $50,000, which will be distributed evenly between UC Davis Health Systems’ WeCARE! Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Peer Navigator Programs, which provide outreach, education and support to newly designated breast cancer and prostate cancer patients.

"The generous support of Fruitridge Health and Wellness Collective enables us to expand our unique WeCARE! Community-Based Cancer Peer Navigator Program to train more cancer survivors as cancer coaches for newly diagnosed cancer patients throughout our region" said Marlene M. von Friederichs-Fitzwater, assistant professor and director of the Outreach Research and Education Program at UC Davis Cancer Center.

Laura McIntosh's recipe of the week: Sour Cherry Sangria

This week, "Bringing It Home" TV show host Laura McIntosh tells us how to make Sour Cherry Sangria.

Ingredients
1 Lb Sour Cherries, washed and pitted (save the juice)
1 Cup Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
1 Cup Simple Sugar
1 1/2 Cups White Rum
1 1/2 Cups White Wine
1 Cup Sparkling Water (add just before serving)
2-3 Cups Ice
5-6 Each Fresh Mint Sprigs

Cooking Instructions
Pour ice into a pitcher. Drop fresh mint on top of the ice. Pour in all remaining ingredients and stir.

*Varieties of cherries that can be used in this recipe include: Bing, Rainer, Lambert, Morello or Montmorency
**For more burst of flavor try adding the juice of an orange, or peach, or both!

Fire forces S. Sacramento assisted living center evacuation

SACRAMENTO, CA - A two-alarm fire caused the evacuation of an assisted living center in south Sacramento Monday morning.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. at the Crestway Manor Assisted Living Center in the 2600 block of Stockton Boulevard. Sacramento City Fire Department Captain John Burgess said 72 people were evacuated from the home and didn't say when they would be allowed back in.

The fire also closed the intersection of Stockton Boulevard and 2nd Avenue in both directions. Still no word on when it will reopen.

Relatives attack gunman

SACRAMENTO - Two people are hospitalized after a shooting in Sacramento on Sunday afternoon.

The situation appears to have started with a verbal confrontation at 40th Avenue and Martin Luther King Blvd.

According to a witness, a car was making a u-turn at the intersection when a stranger on the sidewalk yelled obscenities to a woman in the car.

The car pulled over and the husband of the woman confronted the man. The dispute escalated and the man pulled out a gun and allegedly shot the husband.

Nearby was a vehicle carrying relatives of the victim. They confronted the shooter, taking the gun and attacking him.

According to Sacramento Sheriff Jason Ramos, the husband sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his hand. The alleged shooter was hospitalized for severe facial injuries.

So far no arrests have been made.

Gibson Ranch Re-Opening Celebration

Gibson Ranch celebrated its grand re-opening on April 23.  The event featured an exhibition by the Sacramento Sheriff Mounted Enforcement and Search and Rescue units, nursery characters, hay rides, face painting, petting zoo, bounce houses, balloon tying, antique fire trucks, and bag pipers.

Next month, Gibson Ranch will display its annual Civil War Re-Enactment on May 21-22, 2011.
