Bullet-proof vests for police dogs?

Thor, a police dog at the Antioch K-9 unit, received a bullet-proof vest on Tuesday along with the 3 other dogs.  K-9 Thor was shot by a suspect last summer and survived.

There are a new vest design that is custom-fit for each dog and allows them to move with greater freedom and mobility than the old-style bullet-proof vests.

Do you think the new vests will help our furry 4-legged officers?

Sacramento elderly targeted by scam, home invasion

SACRAMENTO, CA - For the seventh time in one month, an elderly resident has been targeted by people claiming to work for a utility company, only to see them use the front to gain access to, and steal money from, the victim's home.

Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Officer Laura Peck said the latest incident happened Saturday before noon, on Tahoe Way in east Sacramento. John Vos, 91, was home when a man wearing a hard hat and work shirt approached him in his back yard, and said work was needed to repair a water leak. By the time Vos realized something was wrong, the burglary was in progress, with two other men ransacking his home.

"I came running out, and (the man) caught me halfway, and got a hold of my arm. And I gave him a chop," said Vos, explaining how he tried to catch the thieves.

They made off with about $400 in cash from Vos' bedroom.

Deputies descended on the intersection of Thurman Way and Stockton Boulevard, setting up a perimeter.

The suspect was able to elude officers for over an hour by jumping fences, running through backyards and breaking into two residences.

Shortly before 5 p.m., a K-9 unit tracked the suspect to a home on the 5700 block of Nina Way.
