SACRAMENTO, CA - Firefighters responded to calls in south Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and along Highway 50 near East Bidwell early Friday morning.

According to Sacramento Metro Fire Assistant Chief, Scott Cockrum, the first fire was called in at 12:47 a.m. from 7700 Rose Petal Way in south Sacramento. No injuries were reported.

Less than an hour later, Rancho Cordova fire crews were called to the Point Knoll Apartment complex at 10680 Coloma Road. Teams extinguished the fire that had started in the boiler room and spread to the building's attic and roof.

Sacramento car crash turns into murder probe

SACRAMENTO, CA -- What was believed to be a fatal traffic accident in a south Sacramento neighborhood has turned into a murder investigation.

Sacramento police officers were called to 15th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard Thursday just after 11 p.m. after a Honda CRV crashed into a house.

Driver dies after car veers into Sacramento home

SACRAMENTO, CA - The driver of a small compact car died after his vehicle veered off Franklin Boulevard and into a house shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday.

The impact caused a gas leak that Sacramento firefighters had to shut off before they could safely pull the person from the vehicle. The driver was taken to UC Davis Medical Center but was pronounced dead within minutes of arriving.

Sacramento police Lt. Steve Winton said it was unclear what caused the person's death. The vehicle had crashed through a wrought iron fence, crossed over about 150 feet of a parking lot and into a house on 15th Avenue.

The vehicle was lodged less than halfway into the house and the woman who was inside said she heard and felt the impact but was not injured.

Winton said it was not yet possible to tell if alcohol or speed may have played a part in the accident.

Firefighters and Sacramento officials reach tentative deal

SACRAMENTO, CA - A tentative agreement is on the table.

The Sacramento Area Firefighters Union has agreed to partially restore several safety units and reopen some fire companies in the city.  If the agreement is accepted, city firefighter salaries and benefits will be cut.

"This deal is conceptual and much will be required in the coming days to hammer out the specifics and get it ready for council approval," said Jaymes Butler, union vice president.

The deal, if approved, would partially restore fire company closures now in effect. In addition, rescue, HAZMAT, and boat rescue programs would be reinstated.

The deal could take several weeks to complete, but could be finalized as early as Aug. 15.

"Firefighters know that this is a fiscal crisis that hits everybody," said union spokesman Todd Filbrun.  "We want to do our part to make sure the citizens of Sacramento are safe."

State moves to shut down local recycling service

SACRAMENTO, CA - You might think an upstart company that encourages curbside recycling would be applauded by state regulators --but instead it has been ordered to knock it off.

Set it Aside has built a customer base of over 2,000 since starting operations last year. The company picks up bottles, cans and other recyclables at homes and businesses and then collects payment from a certified recycling center. Set it Aside splits the proceeds with its customers.

Company spokesman Joey Zeleny said the average customer nets about $5 a month.

"It doesn't sound like a lot, but $60 a year for doing nothing different than what you're doing now, it adds up," Zeleny said.

The state of California contends what the company is doing is illegal.

West Nile Virus Activity Increases as More Bird and Mosquito Samples Test Positive in Sacramento

Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District announced that further evidence of West Nile virus activity has been detected in Sacramento County as two more mosquito samples and seven bird tested positive. Most of the mosquito samples and birds have been collected in south Sacramento County in the communities of Wilton and Elk Grove, but evidence of WNV activity has also been found in Sacramento and Citrus Heights. “The cooler weather we have had this year probably explains our relatively low numbers of infected mosquito samples and birds compared to previous years, but residents still need to be aware that West Nile virus is a threat,” said David Brown, District Manager. “Hot temperatures can quickly amplify the virus.
