Gusty winds prompt health caution

Gusty winds prompt health caution

Blowing dust in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and the valley portion of Kern counties poses potential health concern

Local air pollution officials are issuing a health cautionary statement effective through Wednesday night, May 22, 2013, because of blowing dust resulting from gusty winds. The health caution is in effect for San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and the valley portion of Kern counties.

Winds may produce areas of localized dust, which can result in unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter 10 microns and smaller (PM10). Exposure to particulate pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, trigger asthma attacks and bronchitis, and increase risk of respiratory infections.

Frustrated with the Food Chain

Frustrated with the Food Chain

I'm frustrated.

Every time I go to the store I'm just dumbfounded by the lack of isles I can't bring myself to go down.  There is row after row of crap offered as food.  I suppose our definition of food is somewhat loose these days.  No wonder America has health issues.  Seriously.  We are slowly killing ourselves, one spoonful at a time.

Have you ever looked at the foods that are offered on the shelves of the local store? Lots of MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Nitrates, Perservatives I can't spell and I won't even bother to pronounce... The super sad thing for me is knowing that it's there because people buy it, demand it.  It's all about the law of supply and demand.  Americans demand crap food, so that is what they are getting. Crap food.  And then we're supposed to be surprised when people get sick?... Read More

How you can help

How you can help

The tragedy of Monday’s tornado in Oklahoma may be halfway across the country, but there are still ways we can help locally.

Jordan Scott, communications director for the American Red Cross Capital Region Chapter, said the organization is accepting donations for relief efforts. People can text REDCROSS to 9099 to make an automatic $10 donation, or can visit redcross.org to make a donation.

Scott said there are no plans yet to send teams from Northern California over to Oklahoma for relief efforts, but that it usually takes 24 to 48 hours for them to receive requests.

“Our volunteers know it may happen and to be ready,” Scott said. “We’ve got the experience and the expertise here.”

Volunteers from the area have helped out through other disasters, including the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Mo., and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Bail boosted to $4 million in car trunk kidnapping

SACRAMENTO, CA - A judge quadrupled the bail to $4 million Monday for a convicted sex offender charged with forcing a 7-year-old girl into the trunk of his car in front of the child's mother.

Cedric Lain Holland, 25, faces charges of kidnapping to commit another crime and parole violation.

Previous story: Sex offender arrested in kidnapping of 7-year-old girl

In the May 11 incident, the girl and her mother were walking in the area of 54th Street and 47th Avenue when a man stopped his car, grabbed the child and forced her into the trunk.

A short time later, the child escaped from the trunk unharmed.

Holland, who previously was convicted of molesting a 5-year-old girl, was arrested a week later at a home about two miles from the scene of the kidnapping.
